Get to know the mountain
About Golija
Golija is a mountain in southwestern Serbia, stretching between Ivanjica, Raška, Novi Pazar and Sjenica — a ridge about 32 kilometres long whose highest peak, Jankov kamen (1,833 m), offers one of the finest views in this part of the Balkans. For its beauty and pristine nature it is rightfully called the Serbian beauty.
In 2001 Golija was declared a Nature Park covering 75,183 hectares, and in the same year — together with the Studenica monastery — it became the first UNESCO biosphere reserve in Serbia, named "Golija–Studenica". More than 1,000 plant species grow here, and Golija's forests are among the best preserved in Europe.
What makes Golija special
Golija is more than nature. It is also medieval monasteries — Studenica (UNESCO World Heritage since 1986) and Gradac — old highland villages, mountain pastures, honey, cheese, blueberries and wild mushrooms with a taste you never forget. In winter Golija turns into a paradise for skiers at Odvraćenica; in summer it belongs to hikers, cyclists and anyone escaping the city rush.
How to get there
The easiest approaches are from Ivanjica, Raška and Novi Pazar. Asphalt or good gravel roads lead to most villages and viewpoints, and for the most hidden corners we recommend one of our jeep tours.
