Izubra: the trail to Golija's hidden waterfalls
A guide to one of Golija's finest day trips — how to reach the Izubra waterfalls, what to bring and the best time to visit.
The Izubra river springs beneath Golija's highest ridges and, in its upper course through dense reserve forest, forms three waterfalls — each finer than the last.
Getting to the trailhead
The starting point is near the village of Bele Vode, reached by gravel road from Golijska Reka. From the parking area it is about a 45-minute walk at a moderate pace to the third waterfall.
What awaits on the trail
The path follows the river canyon: wooden footbridges, rock crossings and a few steeper sections with a steel cable to hold. Not difficult for regular hikers, but proper footwear is a must — the rocks stay wet and slippery all year.
Tip: start before 10 a.m. The morning light in the canyon is magical and the trail is at its emptiest.
When to go
Best from May to October. In early summer the water level is highest and the falls look mightiest. The bravest swim in the pools — the water rarely exceeds 12°C!
What to bring
- hiking shoes with good grip
- water and a snack (no springs on the trail)
- a spare shirt — the third fall showers you with mist
- a camera, obviously
Izubra is part of a strictly protected reserve: carry your rubbish back and leave the trail nicer than you found it.
